The first attempts to treat male impotence, or erectile dysfunction as it is also known, date back to medieval Muslim physicians who prescribed drugs to try to solve the problem and it wasn’t until the 1920s and ‘30s that the boom in impotency correcting treatments reached the United States.

It’s a delicate issue that many men are uncomfortable talking about openly, this is nothing surprising, but it is vitally important that men suffering with impotency know that it is often the sign of another, underlying illness or problem That impotency is only a symptom of, one that can often be treated and cured easily.

It may surprise you to learn that there are measures you can take to help prevent impotence. Limiting your alcohol consumption, quitting smoking and avoiding illegal drugs will help prevent erectile dysfunction. Also reduce stress and be sure to get enough sleep. Most importantly, work with your health care provider to manage illnesses that can result in male impotence, be honest and realistic about it.

For some it’s too late to prevent impotence, many men are silently suffering with erectile dysfunction right now. Again, male impotence is often a sign of another ailment, diabetes or high blood pressure perhaps, ailments that can be treated.

There are an array of drugs and herbal remedies available for the treatment of impotence. You have likely heard of Viagra, Levitra or Cialis perhaps through a friend or via the Internet. You may not however know the mechanics of how they work and have quite possibly dismissed them in the past. These drugs, though slightly different chemically have work very similarly in that they inhibit chemicals in the body, which relax relevant muscles around the penis allowing for increased blood flow inducing an erection.

The side effects of these popular drugs vary, common side effects may include sneezing, and slight nausea. More seriously and more rarely happening side effect may be temporary loss of hearing, blurred vision and in extreme cases strokes and other life threatening occurrences.

With this in mind it is important to consult your partner before using drugs, herbal remedies offer far less chance of side effects for a very similar product.
